Music and the Spoken Word

Last night I went with my mom and Ari to see the lights at Temple Square and see a Ririe Woodbury performance in Salt Lake. The lights were beautiful and the soft, slowly falling snow was gorgeous. The performance was good, but I decided I much prefer ballet. I'm really glad we went though. Thanks mom!

Today I went to the Music and the Spoken Word special Christmas performance. My dad, Free and Ari and I went. We didn't have tickets, so we went to the Tabernacle in the stand-by waiting area. Luckily, we got in! We were excited to see grandma and grandpa in action fulfilling their calling. Their mission is at Temple Square as ushers and they love it! They do a great job! The performance was absolutely amazing! They had Alfie Boe and Tom Brokaw were guest artists. Alfie Boe played Jean Valjean in London's 25th Anniversary production of Les Miserables and he sang Bring Him Home today. It was so amazing! My dad cried, a lot. Another guest arrived after Tom Brokaw told a really neat story about a pilot after WW2 that met some kids who were trapped in Berlin after it was separated, trapping many people in the border. He met them behind barbed-wire fence and was amazed at their gratitude and thankfulness. He wished he had something more to give, but he handed two of them each one piece of gum he had in his pocket. Without speaking, the children ripped the gum wrappers and passed them around so they could all smell the minty flavor. The pilot convinced some of his buddies to give their chocolate and gum to the children. They dropped it from their plane, tied to some handkerchiefs. The kids recognized his plane by him moving the wings and was later nicknamed Uncle Wiggly Wings, The Candy Bomber and the Chocolate Flier. His name was Gail Halvorsen and he was onstage personally at the performance! It was so neat! He was wearing the same uniform he had back when he started dropping the candy, and he had a bundle of energy as he hopped down the stairs without the rail. And he is 92!! Wow! His efforts he said really gave him, the children, and many others the real Christmas spirit. He even carried the German team's national placard in the winter 2002 Olympics! He also received theGrand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and has an elementary school in Germany named after him. He also served two LDS missions with his wife, Alta. During the song after his story was told, hundreds of parachutes descended on the audience. We were in the balcony, so we didn't get any but they were so pretty and fun to watch! I want to be just like Gail when I grow up! :)
There was dancing, gorgeous costumes, amazing sets, wonderful lighting and of course perfect, Christmas music. The spirit was so strong and the whole performance was just incredible! This has been the best Christmas-spirit event I've been to yet! :)

The Help by Kathryn Stockett The Help is a great book for young adults and mature teenagers. It is education, funny and insightful. It is 444 pages, but a definite page turner. I rated it 5-stars because it is such a great book. It is basically about how unfairly African-Americans were treated in the 1950s and 60s. It changes perspective about every chapter, but it's fairly easy to follow along. It is from the point of view of 3 women from Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960's. Aibileen, Minny and Miss Skeeter are the narrators. I thought it was unique that it had more than one narrator and it allowed you to understand the story much better. Aibileen (my favorite character) is a black women who is "the Help" to Miss Leefolt. She is kind, wise and smart. Throughout the story she develops a strong bond between Miss Leefolt's little girl, Mae Mobley. Miss Leefolt is very strict and rather  oblivious to Mae Mobley. She doesn't really know how to raise her, so Aibil...

Good bye Nutcracker

Nutcracker is over and I'm sad! It was so much fun and I made great memories. I fell on the last night during the Maid dance which was a bummer. My tray flew off my hand when I fell even with the strap on the bottom. I just pretended it was on purpose and made some hand gestures like I gasped and then walked off. Luckily it was at the end of the dance. I still had Waltz and finale and I wasn't going to let one fall make me sad or not do my best the rest of the time. Strangely afterwords I felt really calm and didn't really care until after party scene. It was kind of funny and I didn't hurt myself. The weird thing was that right before the performance I felt like I was going to trip or fall....and I did. Hahaha, well I'm just the really clumsy maid now :)  Maddie is a pro photo bomber. I just wish she'd bombed one of the bad pictures instead!  My favors for the Waltz gals  Emma being me...haha she'd be a great Maid! :) Love her  Cutie...

Apartment 51

My roommates are the best roommates of all time. We had a dance party the other day where Emmy introduced me to the 'nae nae song'. Can you believe I'd never heard it? I know. Emmy has quite the moves too. Gentry was doing laundry, which is an event because she actually does it the right way. Cold, warm washes; darks, whites, color, reds. The works. It took a few hours, so Emmy and I stayed up with her jamming out and chatting. We got a little depressed at how ugly our living room was because we'd had FHE at a guys' apartment earlier and their apartment was amazing. Framed vinyl records, leather sofa, big-screen TV, Ikea spice holders, quotes. We were put to shame. So we decided to put up a bunch of pictures on our wall. It now holds Gentry's towing ticket, pictures, The Living Christ, Proclamation to the Family, my Broadway tickets, a map of San Francisco and more. It definitely cheers up the room. We are going to hang a banner thing up too so we can hang temp...
