The Help by Kathryn Stockett The Help is a great book for young adults and mature teenagers. It is education, funny and insightful. It is 444 pages, but a definite page turner. I rated it 5-stars because it is such a great book. It is basically about how unfairly African-Americans were treated in the 1950s and 60s. It changes perspective about every chapter, but it's fairly easy to follow along. It is from the point of view of 3 women from Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960's. Aibileen, Minny and Miss Skeeter are the narrators. I thought it was unique that it had more than one narrator and it allowed you to understand the story much better. Aibileen (my favorite character) is a black women who is "the Help" to Miss Leefolt. She is kind, wise and smart. Throughout the story she develops a strong bond between Miss Leefolt's little girl, Mae Mobley. Miss Leefolt is very strict and rather  oblivious to Mae Mobley. She doesn't really know how to raise her, so Aibil...

Places

California is warm, humid. It is cool mornings of dolphins emerging from salt water, and surfers catching the dusty turquoise waves. Montana is earthy, wild. It is shy deer, proud bears, and lazy buffalo. It is walking around in cowgirl boots to town, and riding horses through dry grass. San Fransisco is bold, fun. It is the golden gate bridge spanning your imagination and adventure. It is China Town; red, gold, jade. Paris is rich, beautiful. It is modern galleries, and centuries old cathedrals. It is walking, crepe in hand, to a new place that hundreds of years ago, a King walked too.It is watching the Eiffel Tower sparkle like a new constellation that was made just for you. Idaho is comfortable, familiar. It is sitting by your cousin roasting marsh mellows and listening to the river and the crickets.  Utah is different, scenic. It is hot summers, and snowy winters. It is looking at a pink smear of sky, glowing like a constant candle behind navy and ivory mountains. It is ho...
There are so many things that make up a person. I know that "things" isn't the right word, but I can't think of something that adequately describes what a person even  would  be made of. Dreams, accomplishments, interests, regrets, mistakes, wishes, relationships, etc. I love ballet. I want to teach ballet, and I want to dance ballet. It's part of who I am. But my heart also yearns for the actress side of me. The little bite of real acting that I got at the age of ten in a production of Babes in Toyland in Salt Lake City. The countless drives to Ogden for rehearsals of Music Man when I was twelve. The ten-hour dress rehearsals of Jana's plays throughout high school. I miss that. My heart yearns for the flute. The peak of my playing my Senior year when I was practicing daily and could play Carnival of Venice like a pro. When I began to see what my practicing had accomplished and considered going on to play in a symphony. I miss French. Learning an entire other ...
