5 Things Every Freshman Needs

DORM EDITION...
~A minimal amount of things

Things are great, but dorms are tiny and get unorganized and look messy if they are too cluttered. Bring only what you need and stick to these rules for the "stuff" you choose to take...
A) Does it bring happiness?
B) Does it have at least one use?
C) Does it somewhat match my color scheme?
D) Can I easily transport it home?
Some 'things' I have include a Polaroid camera, small bowl from Mexico my mom gave me, travel journals, a stack of children's books, and a little desk calendar
~Twinkle lights
As cliche as it is, they are necessary. I actually have little lantern-type lights that exude a lot of light. I got them from Target and like that they are a bit more substantial than tiny twinkle lights. But if I was hanging them, I'd get twinkle. Mine just sit along my window sill and look adorable. Small lamps are also good. Every night I plug in my two light sources, turn off the lights, and either read or count my blessings. It makes the room seem more luxurious and calm.
~A succulent
They are basically impossible to kill, look fresh and are adorable
~A big, wall art piece
I have a flag, a map of the world, and four hexagon cork-boards for my walls. Since the paint is white and my bedspread is as well, they bring some color, texture, and interest.
~Pops of color
Besides my wall art, I have a little vase with fake (and colorful) peonies, a blue throw blanket, patterned pillows, and vibrant postcards tacked to the hexagons.

PS A fuzzy, warm blanket is also a must!!!!! They are cozy, comforting, and comfortable. Plus, they give great texture and make the room inviting

The Help by Kathryn Stockett The Help is a great book for young adults and mature teenagers. It is education, funny and insightful. It is 444 pages, but a definite page turner. I rated it 5-stars because it is such a great book. It is basically about how unfairly African-Americans were treated in the 1950s and 60s. It changes perspective about every chapter, but it's fairly easy to follow along. It is from the point of view of 3 women from Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960's. Aibileen, Minny and Miss Skeeter are the narrators. I thought it was unique that it had more than one narrator and it allowed you to understand the story much better. Aibileen (my favorite character) is a black women who is "the Help" to Miss Leefolt. She is kind, wise and smart. Throughout the story she develops a strong bond between Miss Leefolt's little girl, Mae Mobley. Miss Leefolt is very strict and rather  oblivious to Mae Mobley. She doesn't really know how to raise her, so Aibil...

Places

California is warm, humid. It is cool mornings of dolphins emerging from salt water, and surfers catching the dusty turquoise waves. Montana is earthy, wild. It is shy deer, proud bears, and lazy buffalo. It is walking around in cowgirl boots to town, and riding horses through dry grass. San Fransisco is bold, fun. It is the golden gate bridge spanning your imagination and adventure. It is China Town; red, gold, jade. Paris is rich, beautiful. It is modern galleries, and centuries old cathedrals. It is walking, crepe in hand, to a new place that hundreds of years ago, a King walked too.It is watching the Eiffel Tower sparkle like a new constellation that was made just for you. Idaho is comfortable, familiar. It is sitting by your cousin roasting marsh mellows and listening to the river and the crickets.  Utah is different, scenic. It is hot summers, and snowy winters. It is looking at a pink smear of sky, glowing like a constant candle behind navy and ivory mountains. It is ho...

On the seventh day of Christmas

December gave to me....early out from school! Davis made their goal of getting $6,500 in 5 minutes during our "Dash for Cash" and earned a 'Christmas Officer Talent Show Assembly'. Otherwise known as 'Go Home After Four Shortened Class Periods.' So we got out at about 11:45 and Emily, Amy, Ruby, Emily M and I went to Fiiz and Bowman's to get stuff for friend gifts. I got some Lindt truffles. We went to Emily's for lunch, then Emily and I went to Farmington Station for a successful holiday shopping trip. Then we went and got her little sisters; Christina and Ellie, and I got Ptolemy and we went to Alexander's Bad Day at Kaysville Theatre. My mom ended up going too and taking Xanthe and Tizzy, who we hadn't had room for in Emily's car. It was such a cute movie! Then I took Ari and her best friend Ellison to Yogotogo. They're such cute girls. It's funny to hear their Junior High stories/experiences/slang. Oh those good ole' awkw...
